It seems like a misconception that Soft surface won't give hard impact on your body.
Hirofumi Tanaka, a physiologist of University of Texas said the opposite. For runner, For Runners, Soft Ground Can Be Hard on the Body. He experince it himself when he tried it himself. After recovering from knee injury, his doctor recommend him to stay away from hard surface like asphalt, paved road and instead walk in softer surface like dirt. The result ? He twisted his ankle.
So, from where all that conventional wisdom come from? Since there aren't any scientific research regarding that.
For me, it does make sense. By running on softer ground, it reduce the impact receive by the body as a whole. But it create additional force (one that enough to stick your feet in the surface so that you can standing still) to keep the stance since softer surface make it hard to stick up.
As usual, common sense is always uncommon.
